Working from home during the school year has it’s challenges, but working from home in the summer with the kids home all day takes superpowers. If you don’t feel like wonder woman, let me throw you a summer life preserver. After the joy of sleeping in the first week of summer, it doesn’t take long for boredom to suck the air out of the room and patience out of the momma.

The best thing you can do for yourself and your kiddos is make a summertime schedule. Children are used to following a school schedule so a summer schedule should be an easy transition for them. You will want to plan outdoor activities in the morning so they will be ready for a little downtime after lunch in the heat of the day. In the late afternoon, when it cools down, you can send them back outside to wear them out for bedtime.

I suggest lots of water fun for outside play.

1. Water gun fights
2. Sponge fights
3. Invest in an easy set pool. (You can catch up on work from the shade)
4. Water and sand make for great creative play outside in a small pool or sandbox.

Fun with food. After a morning of water fun, bring those kiddos in for some creative play with food. There are tons of creative food ideas on Pinterest.

1. Bake cookies
2. Decorate cupcakes
3. Make funny faces with nuts, raisins, fruit, etc.

After lunch, it’s quiet time for the kiddos and work time for the mommy.

1. Check out books on tape.
2. Have art supplies on hand for some creativity.
3. Join a reading club and set aside time for them to read books independently.
4. Give them an inside scavenger hunt.
5. Game time is always fun.

In the afternoon, you can send the captives back outside for exercise.

1. Spray paint a twister game on the grass.
2. Throw them back in the pool.
3. Let them ride bikes or take a walk.
4. Make a nature journal during quiet time and have them look for nature in the evening.

There are countless activities for summer survival. You might also check out local day camps or vacation bible schools in your area. Try to change up activities each day. Create excitement for the next days activities at bedtime. It’s a great bargaining tool for speedy sweet dreams. Although the summer months can make a momma sweat, it can be a great time for making memories, enjoying the presence of your children, and even getting in a little work. It pays to plan ahead. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures.
