These past couple of years, I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing talented photographers in our industry offer beautiful Santa portraits to their clients. From simple backdrops to Santa’s workshops, I admired all the details that go into these sessions, from writing Santa a letter, receiving the “perfect” gift, to tugging on his beard and reading a story with him.
These sessions definitely caught my eye and I wanted to offer this experience to my clients. Last November, I booked a Santa that would travel from Toronto to stay in Oshawa. He was ready to work long days both Saturday and Sunday.
When speaking to a few photographers and asking their advice, the common theme was …hide Santa. In order to avoid tears and capture those perfect moments, we would need to normalize Santa. Once I got my safety shots, then I would have Santa walk around at a distance. This would help children feel safe and avoid melt downs.
The past few months, anxiety began to build up about Santa.
After much reflection, I realized that C’est l’Amour Photography and Santa don’t belong. For years, I have built a brand that offers clients timeless pictures. Memories that can be displayed on your walls for the entire year and never grow old. Pictures that can be given as gifts and don’t scream Christmas. Another value I feel so strongly about… is my relationships with my current clients. I have tried so hard to get to know your children, build relationships, and create a safe place for everyone. The last thing I want to do is bring a “stranger” in a costume into my home and create a less than safe place for your children.
Do I love those classic mall pictures with Santa? Yes absolutely!
Do I have any ill feelings towards other photographers doing these types of sessions? Of course not! There are plenty of other photographers offering Santa pictures and I know they will be gorgeous!
However, I have decided to remain true to me and my little company I have built for the pass six years, and forgo Santa. I am VERY excited for this years Christmas Sessions in my studio. Every year they get better and better.
